During my five year tenure as lead interaction designer at the Financieele Dagblad, i worked on a host of editorial and commercial products. My parting project was a complete redesign of the paper’s main website. Among the objectives were a fully responsive layout, including the more complex financial markets pages; a reduced reliance on photography; a greatly enhanced article page that would support digital-first storytelling; and the ability for the layout to work as a basic grid for other websites.
A basic two column grid supports an editorial slow lane/fast lane approach.
One of the requirements was no content gets dropped in mobile view
The article page is home to a host of storytelling devices such as timelines, a “follow this subject” menu and various embeds
The more technical pages displaying markets- and currency information posed varying challenges in the mobile view
The fd.nl redesign, representing the culmination of five years of lessons learned, was very well received among it’s userbase and realized a significant increase in engagement. The grid became the foundation for a variety of digital products, among which BNR.nl. The UX behind the personalized news section, the search section and the markets section remains in use to this day.
